PAMCA 2006 Offshore Intercellular Fishing Tournament

Was Held August 5th  Benefiting the Texas Educational Institute

My son Alex and I got to the beach house that George Leos of Water Damage Recovery had rented for the weekend Friday afternoon. The house was on the beach, slept 12 and George had also brought a trailer that could sleep 10 more. We had a great time meeting new friends and seeing old friends. By 6:30 the food George ordered arrived and we had fried shrimp, fish, fries, mushrooms and Jalapenos stuffed with crabmeat brought in for an incredible dinner. As the mosquitoes came out we went upstairs to talk, visit and rest up for the great anticipated adventure. The group decided to play cards for fun and decided on chip values. After about 20 minutes of setup they were ready to play. George got the box of cards out and it was empty! His kids had been playing cards and had not put them back in the box or at least that is his story.

They decided on other games and as the night wore on the noise and excitement level increased to a feverish pitch. Everyone was having a great time but as the boats would leave the dock at 6 AM we called it a night at about 1 AM.

“We all settled in for a restless night,

“With visions of a big fish in our sight.”

The day was going to be memorable as the weather was perfect, the seas were only 2 feet and the boat captains were all professional guides that put everyone on fish. We helped load the boats and wished all the fishermen luck. George was going to nap and Alex and I went surf fishing. Alex caught 2 trout and lost a big one and I caught 1 trout, 14 minnows, a turtle, a jelly fish and one tire. At noon we got cleaned up and found George coming back from Wal-Mart with 4 decks of cards and supplies. At 4:30 George got a call and the 1st boat was in. George and Water Damage Recovery had hired 2 boats so they could take John Moore, AAA and other customers fishing and his 2 boats were the first boats in. We started the weigh in while the rest came in. Vermeer had a huge dolphin and it looked like they would win that category. We weighed in long king fish, Red snapper, an angle fish (spade fish) and a bunch of dolphin. The boats brought over their biggest fish and started cleaning the rest. Bobby's boat came in and they had quite a few big fish, but the biggest was Bobby's dolphin was 54 ½ inches long and beat Cal's 53-inch bull. With 38 participants at the tournament it was one of the biggest at Bridge Bait so far and they had a live band to welcome the returning heroes.

Six boatloads of fishermen and fisherwomen went out, this is the order they came in:

1. Water Damage Recovery

2. Water Damage Recovery

3. Vermeer Equipment of Texas

4. Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors

5. Commercial Boiler

6. Walter Pickett Plumbing

All winning fish went by length as that is how Texas Parks and Wildlife determine weather you can keep it and if a tie in length the heavier fish would win. Here are the winners:

After the weigh in we went back to George’s beach house for fishing stories about the big, I mean really big one that got away, drinks, fresh grilled fish and stories of the day’s fishing. Some drove home but all were welcome to stay and spend the night and have more fun. Thanks to George Leos and Water Damage Recovery for hosting a great time for all of the participants of PAMCA's first of many offshore fishing tournaments.

PAMCA 2006 TRIKE RACE

Official Registration Form

Current sponsors include: Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical and C.B. Plumbing Services.

Based on American historical records, international contractor bragging and enthusiasm about who is the best contractor, PAMCA will hold its first Tour de Houston Trike Race March 28th at AAA Plumbers Company, 6547 Petro Park.  For many years various companies have contended that they have the best technicians, the greatest engineering and design skills, the best in architectural concepts and the smartest people in the trade. Contractors have bragged unmercifully that they are the best, the most creative, the most competitive and now will be judged for the greatest bragging rights in Texas. Those bragging include: Brandon Jager, Will Gonzales, Cesar Lima, Dennis Calvert, Walter Pickett, Alan O’Neill, Jim Lindsay, Bobby Schmidt, Bob Merchant, among others.

The challenge has been issued to prove beyond any shadow of a doubt what company is the tops in construction, creative in design, engineering superiority, structurally competent and most innovative in problem solving.

PAMCA will hold its first All American Trike Race in March at AAA Plumbers Company, 6547 Petro Park. Here are the rules as determined by the PAMCA All American Trike Race Committee, after consultation with the American Trike Racing Federation.

1.  The PAMCA All American Trike Race will follow the American Trike Racing

Association rules and regulations for this event whatever those are and if we can find them.

2.  Each PAMCA member, contractor or associate, may enter one Trike or more.

3.  The Trike must consist of three wheels, in the shape of an isosceles triangle.

4.  Each wheel must be load bearing.

5.  The Trike must be human powered, no motors or other mechanical empowerment.

6.  The Trike Race will consist of two parts:

A.  A “Drag Race” with two Trikes competing in a mirror race for 25 yards.

B.  A “Obstacle Race”, with two Trikes competing against each other for 25 yards. The

obstacles cones will be set at about 5 feet apart.

7.  There will be awards for winning trike racers. The winning Trike will be judged by adding the

time for each of the two races and combining the time. In addition, there will be judging for:

The best original design, The most unusual construction, The most original engineering The

most extreme concept, The most unusual, The worst Trike. Also 1st place in the unicycle race.

8.  There will be allowance for Unicycles in the race.

9.  Riders must be an employee or family member of the PAMCA member and must be at least

21 years of age. Races will be by age groups: 21 to 30 years of age; 31 to 40 years of age; 41

to 50 years of age; and 51+.

11.The Trike does not have to be of original design and construction. If of an original design the

construction must be by the PAMCA member (for example, a member cannot use Halliburton

     to build their Trike).

Bobby Schmidt has reported that the great PAMCA fishermen had their own contest and will not be fishing at the golf tournament this year.

PAMCA 1st Saltwater Tournament
2005

By Mark Harper

Friday was a cool, clear October evening, at about 6:00 Jim Collins and I pulled into Linda's bait camp and unloaded our gear into a rustic fishing cabin across the parking lot from the launch ramp. As tournament participants came in we got paperwork out of the way and went in to Linda's diner where we saw stuffed sailfish and trout as well as some trophy deer, elk and boar then enjoyed conversation and a great dinner of fresh caught fried shrimp and a soda. We then headed upstairs to the local hang out and listened the some great music. Finally we decided to do a little fly fishing and went down to the docks with our 8 weight fly rods. I caught a beautiful mangrove snapper with a bright red stomach. We had a group of fishermen from Commercial Boiler watching so we went under the lights and signed waivers and continued fishing. While fishing the participants from Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical showed up and they were mostly women as the men were watching the ASTRO'S win against the Cards. Jim took the right side of the covered dock and I took the left. With both of us casting around the posts holding the deck over our heads and risking a jolt from the power lines on our back casts we each caught small gulf and sand trout and I caught 3 more snapper. Steve Halvorson came over and on his first cast with a live shrimp he got an 18 inch gulf trout. Fat and healthy, it was the biggest gulf trout I had seen in a long time.

Walter Pickett showed up later and we talked and did paperwork as well as discussed tournament rules.
Jim went to bed at midnight and I stayed up with Ty Tipton till 1:30 while coaching Ty in saltwater fishing with shrimp so he and his Dad, Bill could catch some nice fish the next day. By the time He got 2 Croaker and a small redfish, I knew he could continue with the help if his girlfriend so I went to bed.

The tournament started at dawn on a cold Saturday morning in Sargeant Texas. Linda's bait camp had plenty of live bait shrimp, breakfast sandwiches and soft tacos to warm us all up. Participants waited excitedly at the dock, some for their boats to be put in the water, some waiting for other members of their fishing group. When the boats were all ready and loaded with tackle boxes and rods, bristling like a porcupine, fisher men and women climbed aboard and set off on the first PAMCA saltwater fishing tournament. As we went towards the East Matagorda bay, boats flew past me, some at 50 miles per hour. I was fishing with Jim Collins of Bass Pro Shops out of a 16 foot john boat with a 20 hp motor so we steadily made our way to our first stop, bird island where we drifted with the current. After catching dozens of small Trout, Croaker and rat Reds (undersize Red Fish) we moved back towards the channel. We looked carefully for birds working or bait near the surface but saw nothing interesting till we got to the cut leading off shore. We dropped anchor in a prime location and started catching rat Reds and some of the biggest Croaker I had ever seen. Finally I heard Jim say fish on and he netted a 22 inch Flounder. A short while later I also hooked up and brought in his brother Flounder. Jim then got a 23 inch and I got the same size Flounder. Jim caught 2 more undersize Flounder but it was 1:30 so we headed back to the dock to prepare for the weigh in and see what everyone caught.........

PAMCA All American Fishing Tournament Success
By Bill Harper

The first annual or bi-annual All American Fishing Tournament was a huge success. Led by the infamous co-chairs Walter Pickett, Bobby Schmidt and Ty Tipton, the participants cast their lines into the water more times then the golfers swing at their ball at the golf tournament.

“The water was great, the day was fine,” said one fisherman, “but Walter Pickett had a net thrown around his fishing hole and we could not get into it.”  The response from the Water Pickett Plumbing team was, “Cry Babies.”

Ty Tipton brought his dad, Bill, and Bill caught fish off of the dock with a specially designed reel and had a really good time. He laughed more and had more fun then all of our golfers when watching the AAA Plumbers golf team try and hit the ball.

Ty and Bill Tipton show Bill's Mangrove Snapper

Judging was by length, then by weight. Plaques were given in each category and first place also got a new rod and reel, second and third places got to draw a prize out of box of different prizes. Here are the results by category:

Trout

The winner was Dustin Green of Walter Pickett Plumbing with a trout 20½” long

and weighed in at 3.8 pounds. Besides his plaque he won a new rod and reel.

Second place winner was Robert Colvin of Commercial Boiler with a trout 19½” long and weighed in at 2 ½ pounds.

Third place winner was Walter Pickett of Walter Pickett Plumbing with a trout 16¾” long and weighed 1.9 pounds.

Red Fish

The winner was Mesha Kardas of Roto Rooter with a Redfish 26½” long and weighed in at 7.5 pounds.

Second place went to Jimmie Havins, fishing with, Walter Pickett Plumbing with a Redfish 26½” long and weighed in at 5.0 pounds.

Third place was awarded to Jeremy Hicks of Walter Pickett Plumbing with a Redfish 26” long and weighing in at 5.1 pounds.

Flounder

The winner was Greg Mendez of Walter Pickett Plumbing with a flounder 21” long and weighed 4.0 pounds.

The Third Place was given to Steve Halvorson of Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical for a flounder 14¾” long and weighing 1½ pounds.

Jennifer Bachard of Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical caught a flounder 15¾” long and weighted 2 pounds. She also caught a Red Fish with a length of 22” and weighed 4.0 pounds.

Bobby Schmidt and his famous Commercial Boiler team tried to outdo the AAA Plumbers golf team by casting 37,534 times during the tournament. This is just an estimate, it may have been higher. They also had 618 tangled reels, 859 snags and brought in 4 tires, 6 life preservers and a variety of other junk. Bobby said “ one of the reasons we did not have a better showing, we thought we were supposed to catch catfish and only brought worms, grasshoppers and peanut butter and bread.”

There were three brown can awards. The Red Fish went to  Jimmie Havins, fishing with, Walter Pickett Plumbing. The flounder went to Steve Halvorson of Gulf States Plumbing and Mechanical. The trout went to Dustin Green of Walter Pickett Plumbing.

The worst fisherman prize of a pair of yellow fluffy bedroom slippers went Brandon Jager of Church Services. Upon winning this coveted prize he said, “my wife will really enjoy these. Next year I am going to fish in Matagorda Bay instead of the reed marshes.”

Sponsors were recognized with certificates of appreciation and large red, white and blue signs with special thanks for the generosity of helping with this tournament by Bass Pro Shops.
